Stories

Many of the refugees arriving from Turkey are young men. Why so many young single men? The villages where these men are from pooled all their money to send them off. Their hope is that he will make it and be able to start a new life and have a better future. The people in those villages and communities know that they cannot all go, so they send one man off so that their memory will stay alive. They will live on through him. It’s heartbreaking.

Sometimes whole villages come across to Greece. Families, old people, young people, the sick, the blind and amputees; they all come and take care of each other the whole way. They are a community that loves and cares for each other, not willing to leave anyone behind. It was incredible to see how they interact with each other.

The land you can see across the water in this picture is Turkey.
